Project Description:
In November 2017, The Grenadier Corporation set out to restore the historic St. Paul’s Chapel– an iconic piece of Columbia University’s campus. This included restoration of the exterior and a complete roof replacement. Work on the building was completed in phases, with the first phases involving the removal of tiles on the lower-level roofs around the perimeter of the dome and the repair of the roof structures below it. The second phase consisted of the removal and replacement of the tiles on the dome itself. Waterproofing was installed on the roof to allow the new tiles to be placed according to the methods original to the building. Great care was taken in ensuring that the building did not lose its history; replacement tiles were crafted using the original molds! Additional work on this structure included the installation of an apse copper roof, repairs to the exterior steps, cleaning/repair of Guastavino tiles, and cleaning of the façade. The Grenadier Corporation also removed the stained glass windows, sent them for restoration, and reinstalled them. The project was completed in August 0f 2019 and went on to receive the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award.
